Disc 2. 1. 30. Franck: Les Eolides. by Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Willem van Otterloo. Franck: Les Eolides by Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Willem van Otterloo. The most famous work on this CD is Franck's "Symphony in D minor" which was first performed in 1889 and presented here by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Willem Van Otterloo. This is a fine performance of a much-beloved symphony.
CESAR FRANCK: Les Éolides Willem van Otterloo. The Borodin Dances are up to the splendid and exciting standards reached by Markevitch in his Tchaikovsky symphony recordings. (Polovtsian Dances) Fanfare, May 1981. A remarkably successful performance, It is exciting and it hangs together as a whole.
Les Éolides was written in 1876 and premiered the following year. Like the later Psyché, it is a symphonic poem based on the Greek classical mythology, in this case an episode in Homer's Odyssey. Eolus is the Greek god of the wind and the Éolides are the breezes which are sent by Poseidon to aid Odysseus in his return voyage. The work is of much more modest dimensions than Psyché. Unlike Le Chausseur Maudit, it is not obvious that the piece is the telling of a story. The 10-minute work is gentle throughout and without great changes in dynamics or mood . Franck: Symphony in D minor; Les Éolides. Anthology of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Vol. 1 (1935-1950).
The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is a symphony orchestra in the Netherlands, based at the Amsterdam Royal Concertgebouw (concert hall). Considered one of the world's leading orchestras. Queen Beatrix conferred the "Royal" title upon the orchestra in 1988. The Concertgebouw opened on 11 April 1888. The Concertgebouw Orchestra was established several months later, and gave its first concert in the Concertgebouw on 3 November 1888, conducted by the orchestra's first chief conductor, Willem Kes.
The D Minor Symphony and Les Éolides, from Van Otterloo and the Concertgebouw, again sound remarkably convincing, as does the 1970 Monaco recording of the Symphonic Variations. Other artists featured include José Carreras, Eduardo Del Pueyo and Pierre Cochereau. Reliable, if slightly dated performances, but variable sound quality.
