Dry is the debut studio album by English singer-songwriter and musician PJ Harvey, released on Too Pure Records on 30 March 1992. The album was recorded at The Icehouse, a local studio in Yeovil, United Kingdom. The first 5000 LPs and first 1000 CDs included demo versions of the album's tracks and Dry was subsequently released in the United States on Indigo Records in the US. Both versions were released in 1992.
1992-1995 isn't exactly an arbitrary span is the band's career, either, neatly encompassing the Morphine recordings Ryko owns: their first three full-lengths and some b-sides. It's hardly a comprehensive retrospective of this very original band, but there's profit to be had. Let's back-up though, and talk about this band, as perspective is required to understand the disc's failings
The 1995 album Yes and the out-takes compilation B-Sides and Other wise are also given polite nods. Yes is one of the weakest Morphine albums (along with 1997's Like Swimming, but oddly, it has four of the band's finest songs. Honey White", with its wicked, screaming saxophone intro is old-school rock and roll, as is the menacing "Radar". It's Morphine's 1993 album Cure For Pain, though, that most fans love the most, and it's evident the surviving band members feel the same way, since five of that album's songs are included. Their signature tune, "Buena", is a no-brainer choice, as the band perfectly executes the bass-sax-drums formula, while the deceptively gorgeous "Cure For Pain" actually delves into R&B, possessing a real pop hook in its melody, as well as some Motown-style sax playing by Colley.
