Despite its inherent relation to The Fragile, Things Falling Apart should, like any other album, stand on its own. But this album doesn't stand; it never gets up. It's a toddler with two knobs for legs and arms like a Mr. Potatohead. The 53 minute-long album kicks (read: dozes) off with "Slipping Away (Into the Void Manipulation)" by Reznor and Brit mixer/engineer Alan Moulder. Does this sound familiar?: a plodding, Neanderthal beat; a dated guitar; a violin; searing but sanitized fuzz. Then, everything stops so Trent can scream his first line: "I keep slipping away.

While songs like "Head Like a Hole" are fine in the context of the overly angsty music that was coming out at the height of grunge, Nine Inch Nails has somehow managed to sound kind of silly in quick fashion. Just as the Cure and Depeche Mode seem like fossils from another era despite their continued popularity, Nine Inch Nails hasn't bothered to change at all - but the band's music now lacks hooks and melodies, which doesn't exactly work in the heavy eye makeup, teenybopper pop world the group once ruled.
