Year Zero is an alternate reality game (ARG) by American studio 42 Entertainment based on the Nine Inch Nails concept album of the same name, its expected follow-up, and a possible accompanying film or television project. Although the album was released on April 16, 2007 in Europe, and the following day worldwide, the game had been underway since roughly February 12, 2007 and was expected to continue for approximately eighteen months.

Year Zero is the finest Nine Inch Nails recording since Downward Spiral. Its songs are memorable, beautifully constructed and articulated.

Trent Reznor's "Year Zero" sounds so good that I had no idea that he created the majority of the album on his laptop at home. Given TR's masterful production skills and his desire to travel new creative avenues, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. Rife with both science-fiction concepts and socio-political themes touching on George W. Bush-era America toward the later 2000s, Reznor delivers a futuristic vision of dystopia that surprisingly doesn't come across as overwrought or cheesy (as I believe many cyberpunk-tinged musical projects inevitably tend to be).
