Head Hunters is the twelfth studio album by the American pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, released October 13, 1973, on Columbia Records. Recording sessions for the album took place in the evening at Wally Heider Studios and Different Fur Trading Co. in San Francisco, California. Head Hunters is a key release in Hancock's career and a defining moment in the genre of jazz

Head Hunters was a pivotal point in Herbie Hancock's career, bringing him into the vanguard of jazz fusion. Hancock had pushed avant-garde boundaries on his own albums and with Miles Davis, but he had never devoted himself to the groove as he did on Head Hunters.

Keyboardist Herbie Hancock's remarkable career took a surprising turn with this funk album-one of the first jazz albums to be certified gold. Hancock's already-storied career had included an extended tenure with Miles Davis as a member of both the classic quintet of the '60s and the trumpeter's groundbreaking electric dates. As a leader, the pianist had followed a similar course, cutting both outstanding acoustic dates (Maiden Voyage, Empyrean Isles) and experimental electric sessions (Sextant, Crossings). Herbie Hancock - in a December 1996 essay included in the liner notes to Head Hunters - writes, "I started thinking about Sly Stone and how much I loved his music and how funky 'Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself' is. I was hearing that song over and over again. From that inspiration from one artist to another came this jazz-funk classic.

Album · 1973 · 4 Songs. While keyboardist Herbie Hancock had gone electric with Miles Davis, and in his outward-looking solo projects before Head Hunters, nothing he’d done previously packed such a deep funk groove. It's particularly evident on the rump-bumpin’ Chameleon, and there's more than a subtle nod to Sly Stone on "Sly. Head Hunters Herbie Hancock.

Herbie and the management team are here to keep you up to date on everything important in the World of Herbie Hancock. Looking back on Herbie’s twelfth album, Head Hunters, which was released on this day in 1973. Recorded at Wally Heider Studios and Different Fur Trading Co. in San Francisco, the album went on to become one of Herbie’s best known records and represented a landmark moment in jazz history. The album was later added to the Library Of Congress’s National Recording Registry which collects "culturally, historically or aesthetically important" sound recordings from the 20th century.

Herbie Hancock - Head Hunters (1973) gone were the days of progressive fusion for Herbie, instead we've got a inventive funk/jazz. Their was need for more commercial succes and so Herbie got to work with the Headhunter, who would later make their own funk albums. Head Hunters was the first album in which Herbie Hancock attempted to weld his jazz and neo-classical sensibilities to his sophisticated take on the popular funk beats of the time. It's not a bad album and has some great moments, but it's not as developed as his future funk/fusion masterpieces; Thrust and Man Child.
