The band backing Archie Bell & The Drells from 1975-1979 was called "The Melting Pot Band", which featured musicians from several states. McNasty McKnight was the band leader playing trombone. Graduates of the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) in Houston traveled with the group, including Don Pope and Tony Salvaggio on saxophone. In 1975, the band released their "total-disco comeback album," Dance Your Troubles Away. The single "Soul City Walk" made number 13 in the UK Singles Chart, but reached only number 42 on the US chart. After moderate chart showings in the late 1970s, the group split in 1980. Archie Bell later released one solo album (I Never Had It So Good - 1981) on Beckett Records and continued to perform with The Drells for the next twenty years.

It was natural that Archie Bell and the Drells' "The Soul City Walk" would give dance step instructions. After all this was the group that had the whole country dancing during the summer of 1968 with the Atlantic single "Tighten Up," a million-selling dance jam that topped both the R&B and pop charts. Like their first hit for Gamble & Huff's Philadelphia International Records, "I Could Have Danced All Night," the rhythm was provided by Bunny Sigler's backup band, Instant Funk. Originally from Texas, Archie Bell & The Drells hit with their first single recorded for Atlantic in 1968, the gold-selling 'Tighten Up'. In 1975, they signed to Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff's Philadelphia International subsidiary label TSOP (The Sound Of Philadelphia) and recorded this R&B Top 10 album. The first two singles taken from it, 'I Could Dance All Night' and 'The Soul City Walk' charted, but the third single, 'Let's Groove', provided them with their biggest hit since 'Tighten Up'.
