Leopold "Leo" Smit (14 May 1900 – 30 April 1943) was a Dutch composer, murdered during The Holocaust at the Sobibor extermination camp. He was born at Plantage Kerklaan 17, Amsterdam, and studied piano at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam with Sem Dresden and Ulfert Schults and then composition with Bernard Zweers and Sem Dresden.

Leo Smit (1900-1943) is een talentvolle componist van Portugees-Joodse afkomst die in Amsterdam studeerde bij Sem Dresden en Bernard Zweers. Geïnspireerd door de muziek van Ravel en Stravinsky gaat Smit naar Parijs om in contact te komen met zijn idolen. Hij heeft contact met leden van Groupe des Six en hij maakt kennis met het muziekleven, waaronder de jazzmuziek. In de jaren dertig keert hij terug naar Amsterdam om les te geven, piano te spelen (bijvoorbeeld quatre mans) en te componeren. Leo Smit heeft de pech, dat hij (hij schrijft geen typische Joodse muziek) in een verkeerde tijd leeft. His compositional output consists of works for cello, piano, choir and orchestra (most notably An Ancient Song and A Summer Idyll) and a considerable amount of chamber music (most notably String Quartet in D, Sonata in E Minor and A Horse Race Ballad).

Leo Smit was a remarkable musician; deeply knowledgeable and endowed with a prodigious ability at the piano.
