M. Mussorgsky - S. Richter - Pictures From An Exhibition flac album

Pictures at an Exhibition is a suite of ten pieces (plus a recurring, varied Promenade) composed for piano by Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky in 1874. The suite is Mussorgsky's most famous piano composition and has become a showpiece for virtuoso pianists. It has become further known through various orchestrations and arrangements produced by other musicians and composers, with Maurice Ravel's arrangement being by far the most recorded and performed.

This recording of Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition is still to this day, considered the definitive emotional interpretation of what Modest first envisioned and regardless of the poor sound quality, it should be studied and appreciated for what it is. This is the kind of concerto that inspired Ravel to turn Pictures into an orchestral symphony version (1922) which in turn inspired Keith Emerson (ELP) to rework the classic into a classical rock piece for performance (1972), which in turn inspired Japanese keyboard virtuoso Tomita to turn it into an electronic suite (1975). This microsurgery then does not affect the subtlety of the original recording at all and hence, the irritable coughing and occasional audience member "noise" thus remains to bother our listening experience

Today most of the pictures from the Hartmann exhibition are lost, making it impossible to be sure in many cases which Hartmann works Mussorgsky had in mind. Musicologist Alfred Frankenstein, in a 1939 article for The Musical Quarterly, claimed to have identified seven pictures by catalogue number.

This is the great Sviatoslav Richter performance of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. Though there are also recordings of the Soviet titan playing Pictures in Moscow in October 1951, in Prague in November 1956, in Budapest in February 1958, and again in Moscow in August 1958, as well as recordings from London in 1968 and from Naples in 1969, this live recording from Sofia, Bulgaria, on February 24, 1958, is the great Richter Pictures. Why? From a purely technical point of view, he played more right notes in the 1958 Moscow Pictures.
