Live, Värttinä is quite an experience, at least judging from this disc, recorded in the band's homeland in 2000. At the band's heart, as always, are the vocals of the four singers, who can growl like spirits released from hell, wail like banshees out to claim souls, and then turn into angelic souls harmonizing on a cappella tracks like "Käppee  . From the extended applause and two encores that close the album, it's clear that Värttinä enjoys goddess status at home - and on the basis of Live in Helsinki, it's easy to understand why.

fi And actually more new concert dates! Advertisements. I posted already an album with pictures from my stay in Prague. Here now the pics concerning the concert. It took place at Jazz Dock, aside the river Moldau.

This is a good live effort from Värttinä's tour supporting the "Ilmatar" album. Värttinä's strengths are captured well on this album, and the harmonies, as usual, are top notch on their live renditions of "Käppee", "Liigua" and their perennial classic "Kylä Vuotti Uutta Kuuta". These renditions are almost all shifted up a notch in tempo from the original recordings, which adds some energy (which is good and bad in some cases here) to the festivities. I agree with others that this is not the greatest of live albums. Part of the problem is the four songs from Ilmatar, their most recent album at that time (2000). It may be their most powerful album to date, but its dark, atmospheric qualities do not transfer well to the stage, except for the volcanic "Aijo". It is also dependent on subtle and well tuned vocals, which do not seem to have been a high priority.

Värttinä (Finnish for spindle) is a Finnish folk music band which was started as a project by Sari and Mari Kaasinen back in 1983 in the village of Rääkkylä, in Karelia, the southeastern region of Finland. Missing lyrics by Värttinä? Know any other songs by Värttinä?

Värttinä is the most successful Finnish contemporary folk music ensemble to date. Their breakthrough came in 1991 with the album "Oi Dai". Since then, Värttinä has been touring the world over with their harmonically rich music, inspired by the musical tradition of the Karelia region.
