After recording two unsuccessful singles and an album, he was teamed with producer Snuff Garrett, with whom he recorded his first hit, "A Hundred Pounds of Clay", which reached number 3 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart in early 1961 and sold over one million copies, earning gold disc status. Its follow-up, "A Tear", was less successful but his third single with Garrett, "Tower of Strength", co-written by Burt Bacharach, reached number 5 and won McDaniels his second gold record  . Gene McDaniels penned the modern day Jazz Standard "Compared To What" for his old friend Les McCann, Who along with Eddie Harris had a 1969 hit with it on Atlantic 2694. Song was also a northern fave as covered by Mr. Flood's Party In 1971 on GM 714. Gene McDaniels wrote "Feel Like Makin' Love" A 1974 hit for Roberta Flack on Atlantic 3025. This album starts off a little unpromisingly - from an R&B perspective - with McDaniels' version of "Theme from the . He does his best with the latter, as well as numbers like "On the Other Side of the Tracks," but there's not too much that is very soulful on at least half of this album. It isn't until the third song, "The Old Country," that he shows what he can do, but once he does get in gear, he's fine
