The album was first mentioned on Dreamsville on 20 January 2016, and was created during a period when Nelson’s main mixing desk was away for repair. The desk used in its place was an old desk with a number of faults, but luckily this didn’t present too high of a hurdle. Work on the album was completed on 9 February 2016 when Nelson revealed a 14 song track list.

The same year, Nelson's debut solo album Northern Dream, released on his own independent Smile label, drew further attention from Peel which eventually led to Nelson's band Be-Bop Deluxe signing to EMI's Harvest Records subsidiary and releasing Axe Victim in 1974. Special Metal' is an outsider album for me, one which I didn't feel like committing to a physical CD, (which normally I would do for new albums,) but instead decided to allocate it to a digital download only release. It might be said that it falls out of character for me, especially when I tend to eschew rock music for something less brutal these days.

This is the only album Bill Nelson released under the band name Red Noise, and based on his success here, it would have been interesting indeed to have seen this band idea play out for a few more albums. Having disbanded Be Bop Deluxe (a band I admittedly don't know much about), his work on this album is high-energy, guitar-based New Wave rock of a very high caliber. For twelve high-energy tracks (no ballads here), Nelson and company fill their songs with urgency, guitar/synth hooks galore, and occasionally the kind of guitar heroics that make Nelson famous in Be Bop Deluxe (. A Better Home in the Phantom Zone" has some excellent guitar runs).

The album was first announced on the Dreamsville forum on 15 March 2017 before a note of music had been recorded, Songs For Ghosts being an album title that Nelson had wanted for use for some time. However, it wasn't too long before work got underway on the album with 4 songs completed by 5 April 2017. By the end of April 14 song titles were revealed for possible inclusion, with confirmation in May that the project was developing into a double album with extra special attention being given to the packaging.
