De Vermis Mysteriis is the sixth studio album by metal band High on Fire. Cover art was done by tattoo artist Tim Lehii. According to frontman Matt Pike, The album’s title (translation: The Mysteries of the Worm, ) is a nod to a fictional grimoire conceived by the late, great Psycho author Robert Bloch in 1935 and later incorporated into horror master . On April 3, 2012, High on Fire released their sixth studio album, De Vermis Mysteriis. High on Fire was scheduled to play the 2012 Mayhem Festival but dropped off the tour due to Matt Pike's health. Matt Pike returned to the band and they once again began touring in November 2012.

High on Fire's sixth album, De Vermis Mysteriis, or "The Mysteries of the Worm", has a complicated conceptual arc attached to it. The title references a fictional magic book created by the writer Robert Bloch and later employed by . Lovecraft in a number of his stories. Then there are the songs themselves. You come to Pike and co. for their sweaty, thrashing, chipped-tooth sludge; on that record, when they tore into a song that rattled the speakers in a live setting, it came off a bit lifeless. De Vermis is also quite different from 2007's excellent Jack Endino-produced Death Is This Communion: Instead of folding in experimental twists, you get straightforward- albeit mighty, masterfully executed- stoner metal. Imagine 2002's Surrounded by Thieves played by a band with another decade's worth of experience under their belts and whisky in their guts.

De Vermis Mysteriis shows the full breadth of HoF's power and surprisingly strives to expand Matt Pike's vocals. Pike's voice is "interesting" to begin with, but his style of shredded throat/rumbling growl/apocalyptic scream is perfectly matched with the riffage and perfectly suited to the subject matter. This album is High on Fire's 6th full length album and they show no signs of slowing down. De Vermis Mysteriis reeks of all the best elements of High on Fire and sees the band at its utmost power. Maybe now High on Fire has achieved the Slayer/Motorhead ethic. I hope the steamroller keeps on rolling.
