If you aren't already in the know, though, let this serve as some sort of wakeup call to the Oakland band's best collection to date. I listened to it a dozen times before bothering to check the song titles

Death Is This Communion is an epic, utilizing more versatile structures than ever, lengthy songs, showy instrumentals, Middle Eastern influenced interludes and a dynamic that’s impressively wide in scope. Yet these songs still pummel every bit as hard as one would expect them to, maybe even more so. Matt Pike, Des Kensel and Jeff Matz haven’t so much razed the foundation so much as built higher turrets and ramparts, constructing a formidable fortress of an album, enormous and fearsome. As a matter of fact, all of Death Is This Communion kicks ass, which should really come as no surprise. That’s High On Fire’s . they just came equipped with greater weaponry this time around. No band today better combines a classic metal sound with such forward momentum and progression, and with an arsenal like this, they’re set to conquer anyone who dares challenge that notion.

High on Fire's 2007 album Death is This Communion succeeds at being a shining example of what heavy metal should sound like. I bought this album thinking it would be more doom metal than it turned out to be since the band is fronted by Sleep guitarist Matt Pike. Instead, this is more heavy/stoner metal sound than anything. It's pretty good and since it defied my expectations in a positive way, I can understand why it has been so highly acclaimed. One song after another, "Death Is This Communion" doesn't fail to deliver the goods if you wanna hear a well rounded metal album that's simultaneously original while paying homage to classic thrash metal. Play it for the whole family. There's something in for everybody.
