Kenny O’Dell grew up outside of Bakersfield, California and its fertile music scene, and found his greatest successes penning songs for Charlie Rich (the Grammy-winning chart-topper Behind Closed Doors ), The Judds ( Mama, He’s Crazy ) and Loretta Lynn ( Trouble in Paradise ). But before O’Dell was on the country side of town, he released an all-but-unknown album in 1968 that captured the post-Summer of Love ethos. The string-laden No Obligations, the A-side of Kenny’s lone White Whale single, uncannily recalls the sweet sound of Gilbert O’Sullivan’s early hits. Did the young O’Dell have an identity crisis?

Kenny Rogers is the second studio album by Kenny Rogers from United Artists Records, released worldwide in 1977. The album marked his first major solo success following the minor success of Love Lifted Me in 1976. The album produced two singles. The first single, 1976's "Laura (What He's Got That I Ain't Got?)", peaked at This song was originally a country hit for Leon Ashley in 1967.

By the time his song "Beautiful People" became a minor hit for him in 1967, Kenny O'Dell had been working his way through the music biz in fits and starts. He had written songs for Duane Eddy, started his own record label, and formed a Mamas & the Papas-style lounge act (which featured the ex-wives of both Duane Eddy and fellow guitar whiz Al Casey), but hadn't made much of a splash. The sweet sunshine pop of "Beautiful People" changed that, as both his original demo and Bobby Vee's very similar version reached the Top 40. O'Dell's label jumped.
