Carlos Wesley "Don" Byas (October 21, 1912 – August 24, 1972) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist, most associated with bebop. He played with Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Art Blakey, and Dizzy Gillespie, among others, and also led his own band. He lived in Europe for the last 26 years of his life. Byas was born in Muskogee, Oklahoma. Both of Byas' parents were musicians. His mother played the piano, and his father, the clarinet.

Byas is in top form throughout, plying his smoky and slightly tart tone on ballads like "Laura," while showing off a lithe brand of swing on an up-tempo "The Sheik of Araby. Not as solid as Classics' 1944-1945 volume, but still a fine selection for Byas completists.

Talk about Don Byas - 1945

Garne
The liner notes of this record are kind of weird - talking about "all too short lifetime" and "early demise". Maybe the author mixed up Don Byas and Charlie Parker?
