So it's no surprise to find that their concertos were composed as vehicles for them to flaunt their digital wizardry - though the two masters strutted their stuff in very different ways. Chopin adored the bel canto operas of Bellini and Donizetti, and both his concertos are like extended operatic scenes in which the piano acts the role of the prima donna, and the pianist is required to play the music with a limpid, singing tone and supple phrasing  . In September 1999 the first International 'Martha Argerich' Piano Competition took place in Buenos Aires - a competition which does not only carry her name but in which she is president of the jury.

Kern's interpretation of the Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, O. 1 is generally well done and has all of its parts in the right place.

Redlands Symphony proudly presents CHOPIN's Piano Concerto No. 11. Discover little-known secrets and interesting discorse on its history, creation, and performance. Chopin was only twenty when he composed the Concerto in E minor. In March 1830, he wrote, is not yet finished because the right inspired mood has kept eluding me. In September, he wrote to his closest friend that he had finished the concerto. He added that I feel like a novice, just like I felt before I knew anything of the keyboard. It’s far too original, and I probably won’t be able to learn it. On October 11, 1830, he played the premiere at the Warsaw National Theater

Frédéric Chopin wrote his Piano Concerto in E minor, Op. 11, in 1830, and first performed it that same year. The premiere, with him as a soloist, was part of one of his 'farewell' concerts, before leaving Poland. This concerto was the first of Chopin's two piano concertos to be published, and was therefore designated as 'no. 1', even though it was written after the one that was later published as 'no. 2'. The Piano Concerto no. 11, was dedicated to Friedrich Kalkbrenner. The music of Poland appears in the finale, a Vivace - rondo that features a polka.
