Lonnie Liston Smith - Dance Floor. Obsession (Love Goddess) Lonnie Liston Smith feat Phyllis Hyman & Najee 4:56.

Lonnie Liston Smith, Jr. (born December 28, 1940) is an American jazz, soul, and funk musician who played with such jazz artists as Pharoah Sanders and Miles Davis before forming Lonnie Liston Smith and the Cosmic Echoes, recording a number of albums widely regarded as classics in the fusion, smooth jazz and acid jazz genres

When Lonnie Liston Smith made the transition from sideman to leader in 1973, it was the beginning of a t-bop band he dubbed Lonnie Liston Smith & the Cosmic Echoes. The acoustic pianist/electric keyboardist, who was born in Richmond, VA, on December 28, 1940, should not be confused with soul-jazz/hard bop organist Lonnie Smith.

Smith recorded ‘Astral Traveling’ with his own band, the Cosmic Echoes, for Flying Dutchman. With its dreamy keyboard passages it’s a key song in Smith’s repertoire and reflects his interest in gaining knowledge and wisdom by exploring religion, philosophy and spirituality. I was trying to keep it all enlightening, reflected Smith. Fast-forwarding to 2012 and Lonnie Liston Smith’s music still sounds fresh, vibrant and above all, relevant. The fact that many of the songs on this collection have been plundered for samples in the hip-hop era – by Jay-Z, Stetsasonic, Mary J Blige and others – affirms the enduring appeal of his cosmic sounds.

Lonnie Liston Smith's musical path in the 70's had basically been one of consistent rhythmic revolutions. And since there was something new on that horizon,Smith was enthusiastic to embrace the rhythms of the times. Get Down Everybody (It's Time For World Peace)" approaches the new dance funk sound in a manner similar to Brass Construction-filled with high octane Afro-Latin percussion. On the other hand it keeps it's foot firmly inside the message of his music, even adding a little melodic reference from Marvin Gaye's What's Going On on the refrain.

When Lonnie Liston Smith left the Miles Davis band in 1974 for a solo career, he was, like so many of his fellow alumni, embarking on a musical odyssey. For a committed fusioneer, he had no idea at the time that he was about to enter an abyss that it would take him the better part of two decades to return from. Looking back upon his catalog from the period, this is the only record that stands out - not only from his own work, but also from every sense of the word: It is fully a jazz album, and a completely funky soul-jazz disc as well

In fact, keyboardists Dr. Lonnie Smith and Lonnie Liston Smith are often mistaken for one another, given their similar styles and the coincidental timing of their successful careers.
