This satirical bent on the album at first seems to be a gentle mock on the quiet storm genre that over-romanticizes and almost trivializes the act of lovemaking. However, as Nakamura's ostensibly sensual beats begin to invade the listener's mind-frame, the music renders a feeling more of the painful nausea of a bad trip or a love hangover.
Lovage is a collaborative project headed by Dan the Automator, under his pseudonym Nathaniel Merriweather (a persona he created for the project Handsome Boy Modeling School). Their only album is titled Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By, which was created in team with Mike Patton and Jennifer Charles, who both provide vocals. The cover art is a double homage to two different things: the album art is inspired by Serge Gainsbourg’s second album N° 2 whereas the title is a nod to Alfred Hitchcock’s Music to be Murdered by which Dan The Automator sampled on his first ever EP of the same.

I have to admit that when I first reveived this album I wasn't immediately in love with the Lovage. It's not sexy in the style of Maxwell or other soulful pimps (not that it's supposed to be!) but rather it's more of a raunchy/dirty sound with loops. gets better with time and not tired!). I have some of Jennifer Charles' Elysium Fields stuff but I haven't heard her sound as good as she does on this record.
