The "angry young men" were a group of mostly working- and middle-class British playwrights and novelists who became prominent in the 1950s. The group's leading figures included John Osborne and Kingsley Amis. It is thought to be derived from the autobiography of Leslie Paul, founder of the Woodcraft Folk, whose Angry Young Man was published in 1951.

Their impatience and resentment were especially aroused by what they perceived as the hypocrisy and mediocrity of the upper and middle classes. The Angry Young Men were a new breed of intellectuals who were mostly of working class or of lower middle-class origin. Some had been educated at the postwar red-brick universities at the state’s expense, though a few were from Oxford

The Angry Men’s works were politically committed and dealt with contemporary themes. They took as subject matter the middle and the working class and depicted in realistic terms their typical habitat, generally a gloomy and shabby room; they were torn between the hope provided by their ideals and the depressed reality which shattered all hopes of a better future. Unlike the Theatre of the Absurd, which was a European phenomenon, the Angry Man was typically English. As about the origin of the label Angry Young Men, there has been a misunderstanding of the title Look Back in Anger. Wesker closed the article maintaining that there has never been an angry young man or a group of angry young men. We were happy instead, because our plays had success after the label and we could earn a lot of money.

Sadly it's falling apart now. just I loved this little book when I first bought it many moons ago, partly because of its great fifties cover (1959 pb), including the blurb: Sex- freed from value or social restrictions - the intimacies of drug addiction, the thrills of crime, the comforts of gang life and the willingness to dislocate and suffer. The BEATNIKS and the ANGRIES speak their minds. and Kingsley Amis, who couldn't be further from the description above. Sadly it's falling apart now. just (April 2012) had to put up the cover again

The book isn't only about the "angry young men" writers of the UK of the 1950s, but also about the Beats of the US, and there's plenty of comparing and contrasting, and discussions of themes. It's an interesting read, although there's way too much wonky literary criticism that's dry as dust and incredibly confuscating.
