The Ramones were an American punk rock band that formed in the New York City neighborhood of Forest Hills, Queens in 1974. They are often cited as the first true punk rock group. The Ramones’ self-titled first album came out in April 1976, and by sales standards alone it was a flop, reaching only No. 111 on the Billboard chart. But with its raw sound and extremely bare songwriting style, Ramones became a founding document of punk rock. For its 40th anniversary, the album is being celebrated with an expanded reissue due this summer from Rhino Records and an exhibition, Hey! Ho!
In comparison to some of the music the album inspired, The Ramones sounds a little tame - it's a little too clean, and compared to their insanely fast live albums, it even sounds a little slow - but there's no denying that it still sounds brilliantly fresh and intoxicatingly fun. Track Listing.
