Barber began work on the concerto in March 1960. John Browning was the intended soloist from the outset and the concerto was written with his specific keyboard technique in mind (Heyman 1992, 410–11). The first two movements were completed before the end of 1960 but the last movement was not completed until 15 days before the world premiere performance.

Samuel Barber: Piano Concerto - William Schuman: A Song of Orpheus. I can't say for sure that George Szell was a "champion" of American compositions, but here he is with his legendary Cleveland Orchestra in two concertante works featuring two preeminent American soloists in John Browning and Leonard Rose. Browning has been long associated with the Barber piano concerto (and the Ives Concord sonata), and this makes this something of a reference recording. Among the Barber symphonic works, I still prefer the violin concerto, but the piano concerto has its moments

No less important in Cleveland history was Samuel Barber's Pulitzer Prize-winning Piano Concerto, uniformly hailed as an "American classic" at its premiere. The work was composed for John Browning, who recorded it with Szell and the orchestra in 1964 and played it with them to enormous acclaim on an international tour the following year. It is paired here, as in its original LP release, with the first recording of William Schuman's A Song of Orpheus, composed for cellist Leonard Rose.
