The title "Roxy by Proxy" alludes to the album's unusual distribution process. ZFT sells distribution licenses to individuals, who are then authorized to sell the factory-pressed CD with stock packaging and a 32 page booklet with a fine essay by Ruth Underwood, the only female instrumentalist that Zappa collaborated with for an extended period. Roxy by Proxy is a live album by Frank Zappa, recorded in 1973 and released posthumously in 2014 by The Zappa Family Trust on Zappa Records. Ruth Underwood takes the listener on stage at the performances in her song by song liner notes. Roxy by Proxy, consists of unreleased material from the December 9 & 10, 1973 shows recorded live at The Roxy Theatre in Hollywood, California. In late 1974, parts of these concerts were released on the double-LP set Roxy & Elsewhere. That album mixed material from these shows with music recorded a few months later, all of that material overdubbed and remixed. Frank Zappa's 'The Roxy Performances' will be released on February 2, 2018. Some of the songs that were recorded ended up on 1974's Roxy & Elsewhere LP, and later on Roxy by Proxy and Roxy the Movie, but The Roxy Performances marks the first time many of these shows have been collected in their entirety. Two nights before Zappa and his band played the Roxy, he invited some friends and other guests to a private show that was recorded and filmed. Two nights after the Roxy concerts, they headed to Ike Turner’s Bolic Sound in nearby Inglewood, Calif. for a recording session that was also filmed.
