Instead sticking to that, EMF recorded Stigma, which was a nice F-Off to the commercial world and a musically rich album. But it had nothing to do with the previous hits. In fact, Stigma had no chart hits, but it's a well-crafted 45-minute sonic nightmare, shaped into "pop" songs. The usual vocal samples, acidic synths, that down-and-dirty bass, the drums, the vocals are all overdriven -not noisy, just simply balancing on the edge. Clearly it was a new territory

Although the surprisingly intense Unexplained EP gave EMF's fans some clue as to the direction the band was going to take with its next album, Stigma still took many by surprise. A claustrophobic record filled with heavy walls of guitars, effects, and dark keyboards, Stigma is about as far away as possible from the sunny dance-pop of Schubert Dip. While that album hid some darker lyrical concerns under its bubbly pop surface, Stigma is almost entirely concerned with feelings of alienation from fame, love, and friendship.

Perhaps that's the stigma that 'EMF' were going for on 'Stigma'? Or is it an enigma? Stigma, enigma, they all have igma. I can see why AMG like this album; it's dramatic without going to melodrama; it's more sophisticated than it's predecessor. The lyrics are generally more thoughtful about young men's issues than the usual 'mummy I learned how to punch myself in the head'. But then, too often the vocals are buried in the mix, or just delivered a bit too quickly to catch what was actually said.
