Theater Of The Mind ‎(Cass, Album). Since I've only heard a few things by Mtume in the past, this album surprised me in its variety. The intro is somewhat chilling, but soon opens up into a parade of funk. The acappella intros and skits are straight up humorous. The music is a little simplistic for my taste; pounding beat, deep bassline and swanky guitar over and over again. However, the album does have a few jems, like "I Don't Believe You Heard Me" and the undoubtedly hilarious "New Face Deli". Give this album a listen, but skip the closing rap; it's goofy, but entirely unnecessary

Theater of the Mind followed on the heels of the group's two previous best-selling LPs, Juicy Fruit and You, Me & He, reaching on the R&B Album charts. Much like it's predecessors, the nine-track set reflected the quirky lyricism and innovative approach that James Mtume brought to his work with the group via tracks such as 'I Don't Believe You Heard (A Tribute to James Brown),' and 'New Face Deli'.

Mtume grew up in a musical environment with jazz musicians frequenting his parents' house In 1966 Mtume joined the US Organization, a Black empowerment group founded by Hakim Jamal and Maulana Karenga, while a student at Pasadena City College. Theater of the Mind (1986) - with Mtume.

Mtume was on somewhat of a downward spiral creative-wise when the group released Theater of the Mind, their 1986 concept album that took a critical aim at the consumerism that was consuming America in the mid-80’s. While it was nice that Mtume was taking on such a serious topic, Theater of the Mind was so far removed from their earlier, more contemporary funk sound, that the album turned a lot of listeners off with its heavy handedness. The best example of this overreach was Deep Freeze, which was broken up into two parts
