Better Off Dead is the fourth studio album by German thrash metal band Sodom, released on October 1, 1990 by Steamhammer/SPV. The song "The Saw Is the Law" in an altered version that was released on the EP The Saw Is the Law. All music composed by Chris Witchhunter, Michael Hoffman and Tom Angelripper, except where noted. Resurrection" is dedicated to Angelripper's late father. The spoken passages at the beginning of "An Eye For An Eye" is taken from the 1989 film The Punisher, starring Dolph Lundgren.

Languid and lazily blissful, like a lo-fi Brian Wilson on a heavy dose of pain killers, the Shivas sound a little less retro but no less poppy on their third proper album, 2016's Better Off Dead, which is significantly more cheerful (and a bit more lively) than the title might lead you to expect. Produced by Calvin Johnson (who also worked with the Shivas on 2014's You Know What to Do), Better Off Dead is a few steps up on the ladder of fidelity from the band's early home-brewed four-track releases, but the aesthetic drift is very much the same.

The album is loaded with country references, from lethargic, softly tapped drums to twangy acoustic guitars. Traces of the band's surf-rock roots are cut and pasted into the Western pastiche. There's some doo-wopping, and though the electric guitars take a backseat, they're still there, and pretty idiosyncratically surfy. If a surf band fell asleep after watching too many Sergio Leone movies, this is what their dreams would sound like.

Better Off Dead marks a curve in The Shivas career – a different kind of record for old fans, and a perfect starting point for new listeners.
