Many have been called, but few have deserved to be chosen as the subject of a tribute more than the uncompromising Lee Hazlewood. It isn't just that he's written and recorded so many timeless compositions over the years, but that there are so many potential fans - particularly those born after his heyday in the 1960s - yet to discover them (or who may know him only as the mustachioed hipster who once sang a few numbers with go-go boot-era Nancy Sinatra).

His songs are truly beyond categorisation. He was also a pioneer in the mysterious art of record production and taught a thing or two to the teenaged Phil Spector, who hung around paying close attention while Hazlewood crafted magnificently cavernous guitar instrumentals for Duane Eddy. Of the 25 tracks on Califia, Lee wrote each one and produced all but four.

Now Astralwerks' Total Lee! pays tribute to the man who launched the careers of Duane Eddy and Nancy Sinatra. Participants range from the expected (Lambchop, Calexico, Johnny Dowd) to the surprising (Kid Loco, Saint Etienne). Though nobody had the guts to tackle the classic Hazlewood/Sinatra "These Boots Are Made for Walking," the album sports several fruitful pairings. Evan Dando and Sabrina Brooke get drunk on "Summer Wine," while Pulp's Jarvis Cocker pairs with Richard Hawley to wrap a sinister veil around "The Cheat.

Naturally, Total Lee! is ripe for the pickin'. Steve Shelley's Smells Like label began reissuing Hazlewood's albums in 1999, and is now accompanied by Astralwerks' compilation in tribute to the man's career. While the material being paid tribute to is both thought-provoking and playful, Total Lee! unfortunately works better in theory than in practice (like most tributes), though it does thrive a bit more than your typical musical homage. What makes the album far from essential, yet still enjoyable, is the rediscovery of songs that are so heartbreakingly genius, yet so neglected. Rather than just demonstrate their love for a popular artist (see 2000's Badlands: A Tribute to Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska), the musicians on Total Lee! bring a contemporary element to an abandoned body of work that reminds us just how essential it really is.
