Two years after Andy Stott's astounding LUXURY PROBLEMS comes FAITH IN STRANGERS, another album of dark, experimental techno. But those expecting thick, grimy house will be surprised, first by the ambient harmonics of "Time Away," which could have been a lost Biosphere track, then the spare, mysterious electro of "Violence. But fear not, the latter track finds its way into the sludge in no time, even as it's the closest Stott has come to a traditional 'song' in some while. On Oath" also lets the vocals take center stage, and a synth-pop beat.

Andy Stott will release a new album, Faith in Strangers, on November 17. The album will be released by Modern Love with the below tracklist. According to a press release, it straddles analogue club music and vocal pop songs, somewhere between Ron Hardy, Prefab Sprout, Dome, Actress, Cocteau Twins and Arthur Russell. As with Stott’s last solo album, Luxury Problems, it features several vocal contributions from Alison Skidmore. Earlier this year, Stott teamed up with Miles ‘MLZ’ Whittaker for Drop the Vowels, an album under their Millie and Andrea alias.

What Faith in Strangers does do is confirm Stott's position as one of the most stirring and explorative producers going. Andy Stott is known for his outstanding dub-techno/ambient efforts delivered greatly in past EPs and in his excellent 2012 full lenght album Luxury Problems, that delved in deep cavernous and icy territory, using lush synths and large, intense production.

Faith In Strangers weaves between moments of compositional clarity and spooky ambience: clarion calls, reverb tails and breathy, pregnant silences. But while Faith In Strangers may be body music (in the broadest sense), it invariably favors dripping, pulpy atmosphere over the vestigial pulse of Stott's earlier work. How It Was" exemplifies this approach: though a small army of drums gallops beneath the surface, we only hear the.

Faith in Strangers is pretty outstanding, an eclectic, innovative, and cohesive addition to the ambient canon. Yet for all their bold gestures, most of its tracks remain beholden to the genre’s tradition of layered open-endedness. Though fantastically produced, the record may seem a bit claustrophobic or excessively charged or oppressed at times to be fully enjoyed.

Andy Stott is a Manchester-based producer of dub and techno music who has released five albums with the Modern Love label. His debut album was Merciless in 2006, and was followed by Unknown Exception (2008) and Luxury Problems in 2012. Passed Me By (2011) marked a significant change in Stott's sound; it has none of the elements of his previous dub techno release, opting for a much more bass-heavy sound a la Sunn O))) and Demdike Stare.

Faith In Strangers, Stott's latest LP for Our Modern Love, is the kind of album that craves automotive listening. And it sounds extremely good at high volume, preferably whilst opening up the throttle in a fast car down a long and empty road (although it does just fine on an iPod in the train, should you rock public transport). If you're not familiar with Andy Stott's work, now is a great time to start, because he may just be hitting a new stride  . Which is apt, since Faith In Strangers is next-level Andy Stott.
