Luxury Problems is the second studio album by English techno musician Andy Stott. It was released in November 2012 under Modern Love Records. Stott's EP Passed By Me (2011) marks the beginning of the part of his discography where he made tracks with a less dub techno-tinged style that defined his previous records, opting instead for a much more bass-heavy sound a la Sunn O))) and Demdike Stare, slower tempos, and more abstract arrangements.

Andy Stott is a Manchester-based producer of dub and techno music who has released five albums with the Modern Love label. His debut album was Merciless in 2006, and was followed by Unknown Exception (2008) and Luxury Problems in 2012. Passed Me By (2011) marked a significant change in Stott's sound; it has none of the elements of his previous dub techno release, opting for a much more bass-heavy sound a la Sunn O))) and Demdike Stare.

Andy Stott - Merciless ‘Merciless’ sits on the bleeding edge of a contradiction, and does it calmly – with the serenity of a scalpel. The paradox at hand is that at a time in techno where length, modulation and n are in the ascendant, Andy Stott has redefined techno with an album that appears to violate its contemporary compositional principle: a near-perfect techno LP that moves faster than ghosts. Merciless’ is placed in the middle as a breather between the intensities, but it’s a brief one, as ‘Hi-Rise’ slams the album hat-first into classic techno mode. Hertzog’ is the track where Stott appears to find his own sound: the big bad bug in his bassbin sitting in contrast to ghostly synths which play over the top like northern lights.

Andy Stott's ascent has been astonishingly quick and gained early momentum as his unique combination of crisp beats and fragile melodies combined to mint a sound that was informed by a spectrum of styles, yet remained charmingly idiosyncratic in execution. Put together with a delineated narrative, Merciless clocks in at a little over forty minutes - and in doing so harks back to the days of classic vinyl LPs where an album could be readily consumed in one sitting.

Talk about Andy Stott - Merciless

Ceck
Andy Stott's chilly debut, MERCILESS, starts with the subtle, melancholy throb of "Florence." Stott keeps the bass deep, even with the melody takes a lighter turn, as with "Edyocat." But he can also go the abstract route, with the subterranean rumbles of "Choke," while "Hi-Rise" is much lighter on its feet. Though the mood stays subdued, Stott manages to find so many variations within that general feeling, like the delicate piano of the title track and "Peace of Mind" or the high-low dichotomy of "Hertzog" or the funk of "Boutique," even as it shifts into jazzy territory. But it's the slow, heavy dub of "Blocked" that stands out even further. A great debut.
