Their newest album, the dramatic Before the Applause, is their first in eight years, and it’s the kind of thrilling listen that doesn’t so much ask for as compel attention. The closest reference point might be um Trans Am at their most glossy-soundtracks for ’80s car chases at 200 mph, or synthwave’s repurposing of that same slick aesthetic. The nervous, screaming intensity of a song like Hailing Drums sounds like something that could have emerged alongside Perturbator and Carpenter Brut. Re-TROS have their own distinct sound and style, though, twisting and pushing songs into a variety of shapes.

Here and throughout Before the Applause, Re-TROS sound fully in command of their sound, and fans of Liars, Battles, Factory Floor, and Public Image Ltd will almost certainly get-and love-where they're coming from.

Chinese post-punk band RE-Tros' latest album ' Before The Applause' combines the sounds of Factory Floor with Neu! in angular fashion. It doesn’t take long for Re-TROS to blow away scepticism you might have had on hearing the words Chinese post-punk. Second track ‘Hailing Drums’ – all nine minutes of it – is a rabid, pulsating beast that sounds like Factory Floor covering Neu! and pins you down and growls in your face. They follow that with the skittering, angular ‘Red Rum Aviv’, a hypnotic banger that locks into a groove and just hurtles forward, demolishing everything in its path. In the face of such an onslaught, resistance really is futile.
