Steve Goodman recorded five albums for Asylum Records between 1975 and 1980, and they were all out of print by 1988 when his own label, Red Pajamas Records, licensed some of the tracks for The Best of the Asylum Years, Vol. 1. (Subsequently, Red Pajamas licensed the albums themselves. A second volume was always in the plans, and between the two discs, more than 40 percent of Goodman's Asylum output is covered

Goodman’s songs first appeared on a locally-produced record, Gathering at the Earl of Old Town, in 1971. In 1971, Goodman was playing at a Chicago bar called the Quiet Knight as the opening act for Kris Kristofferson. Kristofferson, impressed with Goodman, introduced him to Paul Anka who brought Goodman to New York to record some demos; these resulted in Goodman signing a contract with Buddah Records. Between 1971 and 1980, singer-songwriter Steve Goodman recorded first on the Buddah label, then on Asylum. During this time he wrote and recorded such enduring songs as "City of New Orleans", a 1972 Top 20 hit for Arlo Guthrie and a 1984 Hot Country Single for Willie Nelson; and "You Never Even Call Me By My Name", which was made famous by David Allan Coe in 1974. Goodman won his second Grammy, for Best Contemporary Folk Album, in 1988 for Unfinished Business, a posthumous album on his Red Pajamas Records label.
