Golden Retriever Golden Retriever was formed in Portland, Or. in 2008 by ts Jonathan Sielaff & Matt Carlson. Focusing on the relationship of two primarily monophonic instruments (modular synth & bass clarinet), and utilizing layering with a deft balance of improvisation & composition, the duo has created an infinitely varied approach to their sound world
The 2014 album Seer used this peculiar vocabulary for Golden Retriever’s most coherent yet varied music yet. Encompassing free jazz, kosmische, early ambient, new age, and musique concrète, the record expressed a remarkable range of ideas with an unusual sense of clarity. Continuing this gradual evolution, Rotations rips a handful of pages out of the Golden Retriever rule book. The duo’s third record for Thrill Jockey expands on every aspect of their sound, most notably by adding 10 classical musicians to their ranks. After receiving a grant from Portland’s Regional Arts & Culture Council.
In recruiting additional musicians, Golden Retriever are less focused on giving orchestral instruments their individual moment in the sun and more focused on layering their existing sound further and further, as if to reassert its capabilities.
thanks so much pal, i'm all for experimenting and switching up style even if that means writing something more conventional and/or analytical. StarlessCore August 2nd 2017. this sounds lit im gonna check. can confirm, it is lit. thanks for the feature overlords.
Since their 2010 self-titled debut, Golden Retriever have distinguished themselves from the crowd of instrumental post-rock and avant-garde experimentalists in no small part due to their unconventional instrumentation. Three years later, Rotations augments the duo's palette further than ever before with the inclusion of a chamber ensemble on select tracks. Overall, while the album is varied, it's consistently absorbing as it reveals itself with a sense of suspense through its melancholy ambience.
Experimental ambient duo Golden Retriever enrich their sound by inviting a classical ensemble into their realm on Rotations. Rotations is an intriguing development. In recruiting additional musicians, Golden Retriever are less focused on giving orchestral instruments their individual moment in the sun and more focused on layering their existing sound further and further, as if to reassert its capabilities.
