Thomas Timothy Vernon-Kell (born 10 May 1981) is a self-taught t musician who works under the name of Tom Vek. Born in Hounslow, London, he signed to the small label Tummy Touch Records in 2001, having spent the previous eight years writing and recording in his parents' garage. Vek's debut album We Have Sound was recorded whilst he completed a graphic design degree.

I think one of the remarkable things about this album is how I personally don't dislike any of the tracks. That's quite a tricky thing to acutally find in an album, cos even with my all-time fav albums I tend to find a coupla tracks just don't do it for me & the 'skip' button becomes most useful. Yet with We Have Sound I haven't felt that at all. All the songs on here fit really well but not in a repeatitive dull sense. So yeah, you've got it all here - faster tracks, mellow tracks, general quality though.

With We Have Sound, Tom Vek lives up to his hype and proves he is more than the sum of his numerous influences. In many ways the album's mix of funky guitars, electronic flourishes and belligerent beats seem to sit alongside other new wave revivalartists such as Bloc Party and Franz Ferdinand. But additional elements of lo-fi rock and even jazz make it hard to define, though very easy to dance to. Stand out tracks "C-C (You Set The Fire In Me)" and "I Ain't Saying My Goodbyes", the first two songs on the album, are a case in point.

Tom Vek must have been beaten by lead guitar lines as a kid- he avoids them like a sore subject. And that's perfect, because it gives me something to talk about. He wants to call himself "raw garage rock energy," go ahead. No, not a Blackberry- I'm talking hammy riffs. Now, lead bass lines, there's another story. The bulk of We Have Sound's 10 tracks are as described. Mr. Vek stands interestingly aloof from his backing band (himself), sprinkling on yawning synth swells and, yawn, reverbed vocals. Some will hear the prominent rhythms and levy him with Gang of Four-ish comparisons, but I'm hearing more Hanson. Actually, a song like "I Ain't Saying My Goodbyes" (single) would be a radio smash if a) Mr. Vek had a Blackberry, and b) he used it to contact Sony.

Tom Vek's album, We Have Sound, was released at a time when electro was well in the throes of a comeback. The Klaxons had just come on the scene in Britain as well as Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem. However, there is something about We Have Sound, whether it is the imagery Vek uses or its enigmatic simplicity, that makes it a timeless piece of music. Listening to it, it lives and grows between your ears as of the present moment as the blood running through your veins. When listening, there are very few clues that it was created in a relatively rag-and-bone fashion, if anything, We Have Sound has the aura of music made on the moon in the year 3000. Maybe it is the futuristic sound of the eighties coming through. Vek said that he had help from DJ/ record producer/ wallpaper collector, Tom Rixton to 'do some things, mainly with computers, that I've never been able to do before.
