Lotte Lenya sings "Surabaya Johhny" from Happy End (Brecht/Weill) (1958) From: VAI DVD 4319 Theater Songs of Brecht & Weill Starring Lotte Lenya and Gisela May Lotte Lenya and Gisela May were the two most prominent interpreters of Brecht and Weill in the last century. Here, from 1958, is Lenya performing five of Kurt Weills songs from The Threepenny Opera, Happy End, Mahagonny and the Berlin Requiem. Gisela May performs Brecht songs with music by Weill, Heymann, and Dessau (1972). As a bonus, Martha Schlamme performs two songs of Weill, joined by Will Holt in one number.

Lotte Lenya (18 October 1898 – 27 November 1981) was an Austrian-born American singer, diseuse, and actress, long based in the United States. In the German-speaking and classical music world, she is best remembered for her performances of the songs of her husband, Kurt Weill.

The composer died in 1950 at the age of fifty while Lenya survived another 31 years. Brecht and Weill got occasional mentions in the countercultural press of the late '60s, and I think I may have encountered Lenya's name there as well.
