It is described as a small rural town in central Minnesota, and is peopled with fictional characters and places, many of which became familiar to listeners of the broadcast
Listeners will love this visit to Lake Wobegon, especially as performed by America’s master storyteller. Read "Liberty A Novel of Lake Wobegon" by Garrison Keillor with Rakuten Kobo. Published to wide and enthusiastic acclaim, Liberty is Garrison Keillor?s most ribald Lake Wobegon novel yet, set in a spectacular Fourth of July celebration amid marching bands and circus wagons drawn by teams of Percherons. The Chairman of the Fourth, Clint Bunsen, is in the midst of an identity crisis brought on by a DNA test just as he turns sixty, and he finds solace in the arms of Angelica Pflame, the young beauty who marched as Liberty in last year?s parade.
Garrison Keillor is the host and writer of A Prairie Home Companion, now in its thirty-first year on the air. He is the author of seventeen books, including most recently the New York Times bestseller Pontoon.
Liberty: A Novel of Lake Wobegon. Written by Garrison Keillor. Narrated by Garrison Keillor. Clint Bunsen is one of the old reliables in Lake Wobegon. For six years he has run the Fourth of July parade, turning what was once a bunch of pickup trucks and girls pushing baby carriages with cats in them into an event of dazzling spectacle. The town is dizzy with anticipation- but Clint himself is having second thoughts about his life.
The chairman of Lake Wobegon’s Independence Day celebration has an extramarital fling. Bunsen owns the Ford garage in Lake Wobegon, Minn. the largely Lutheran town said to have been populated by homesteading immigrants from Norway, though actually it’s the creation of Garrison Keillor. In this novel, Keillor has a Melville-to-Ishmael relationship with his protagonist; at one moment it sounds as though Bunsen is doing the talking, and at others you seem to hear his creator’s low, rueful rumble, a sound that gladdens the hearts of the many who listen to Keillor’s weekly radio broadcasts
Liberty: A Lake Wobegon Novel. Is Clint Bunsen suffering a midlife crisis? He is convinced by a faulty DNA lab report that he is part slightly over half Hispanic, which differs strongly from what his family has always believed: that they are absolutely, positively 100% Norwegian. When the Fourth arrives, the community is filled with excitement -- if residents of Lake Wobegon can actually get excited about anything. There's some tension in the air, too, because Angelica has arrived in town with her new boyfriend, Clint's wife is toting a gun, the governor isn’t on time, and all manner of other problems keep popping up. Even CNN is running late.
Liberty: A Novel of Lake Wobegon by Garrison Keillor Paperback £. 6. Only 5 left in stock (more on the way). This l novel is set in mythical 'Lake Wobegon' and once again Keillor takes us back to an idealised 1950's America. Plenty of nostalgic reminiscing make this an enjoyable 'coming of age' tale. For newcomers to Garrison Keillor this will come as something of a well crafted light snack, lacking in depth but faintly amusing and readable. For those of us who have been fans for a while this book is disappointing.
