No Secrets is the third studio album by American singer and songwriter Carly Simon, released on November 28, 1972 by Elektra Records. The album was Simon's commercial breakthrough. It spent five weeks at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart and quickly went Gold, as did its lead single, "You're So Vain", which remained at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for three weeks, and topping on the Adult Contemporary chart for two weeks.
Carly Simon's best album, No Secrets was also her commercial breakthrough, topping the charts and going gold, along with its leadoff single, "You're So Vain. That song set the album's saucy tone, with its air of sexually frank autobiography ("You had me several years ago/When I was still quite naïve") and its reflections on the jet-set lifestyle.
On the covers of her previous two albums, Carly was pictured within carefully composed settings. By contrast, the image on the cover of No Secrets could almost be a paparazzi shot. It is much more immediate, engaging, and informal than its predecessors. Her clothes are crucial to this effect: the handbag over the shoulder, the velour jeans, floppy hat, and loose jersey are as casual as her glance. She is caught in mid-stride, and, with a light breeze blowing and her nipples showing through her top, it is as though we have just bumped into her on the street.
The album was produced by Richard Perry (also known for Rod Stewart and Ringo Starr, among many others) and recorded by ace engineer Robin Geoffrey Cable (Elton John, Nilsson) at Trident in London. It was mixed partly at Trident and partly at AIR studios, also in London, and also by Bill Schnee (of Sheffield Lab, Direct-to-Disk fame) at Sound Labs in .

Studio album by Carly Simon. Robert Christgau, writing in Creem, rated the album a B- and stated that "if a horse could sing in a monotone, the horse would sound like Carly Simon, only a horse wouldn't rhyme 'yacht', 'apricot', and 'gavotte'. Is that some kind of joke?" Stephen Holden in Rolling Stone concluded that "what finally makes No Secrets so refreshing is her singing, which conveys the finest spirit of patrician generosity.
Carly Simon included the hit That’s the Way I Always Heard it Should Be ; the title cut from the follow-up LP, Anticipation, was a single. With a pair of hits under her belt, the songstress recorded No Secrets in London. Just weeks after marrying James Taylor on November 3, 1972, the album (with its iconic album cover photo) was released on Nov. 28, with a slew of guest classic rock musicians: Bonnie Bramlett, Nicky Hopkins, Jim Keltner, Bill Payne, among them.
Carly Simon is one of the most influential singer-songwriters of her generation. The classic album that made her a global star was No Secrets, which included the enigmatic song You're So Vain. The album spent five weeks at number one in the US chart. In this new interview Carly ties together her life and work on No Secrets - she is at her most honest, sometimes defiant, but with a wit and wisdom that comes from her rich and turbulent life.
