However, for some reason the CD market has heretofore altogether lacked a disc that focused on Valente 's artistry exclusively, in recordings made during her prime. Bridge's issue Benita Valente in its freshly minted series Great Singers of the 20th Century - in which this appears as Vol. 1 - appears to redress such shortfall. The Bridge issue combines recordings made originally for LP labels - Desmar, Pantheon, and the still-active Centaur label - and a couple of recordings made at the Marlboro Festival, at which Valente was once a frequent flyer.

Benita Valente (born October 19, 1934), is a distinguished American soprano whose long career has encompassed the operatic stage as well as performance of lieder, chamber music and oratorio. She is especially lauded for her interpretations of Mozart and Handel, but she also excelled in certain Verdi roles. The New York Times once referred to her "as gifted a singer as we have today, worldwide.

Benita Valente was born in Delano, California. She studied voice at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara with Lotte Lehmann and Martial Singher. She later studied with Margaret Harshaw at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia where she graduated in 1960. That same year she won the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and made her formal debut at the Marlboro Music Festival with famed pianist Rudolf Serkin, among others. Early in her career, she appeared regularly at the Freiberg Opera in Germany. She made a notable debut with the Metropolitan Opera on Sept.

Benita Valente sings with rapturous ease, inspired by Rudolf Serkin's wise piano playing and the superb clarinet obligatto of Harold Wright, the best American clarinetist of his generation. A treasurable performance. The whole album is unmissable. This sublime piece, Shepherd on the Rock, presents three world class performers and perhaps the worlds greatest clarinetist: Harold Wright. As a clarinetist who has studied with both Chicago Symphony and New York Philharmonic Clarinetists for years, I marvel at Harold and consider him a sublime combination of a nearly perfect performer: wondrous tone, sublime interpretation and top technical skills. Along with the piano and soprano performances, it is a glorious showpiece for the three and for Schubert.

Benita Valente: Distinguished American soprano whose long career has encompassed the operatic stage as well as performance of lieder, chamber music and oratorio.
