Bob Dylan plays the opening set at Desert Trip in Indio last Friday night. Allen J. Schaben, Los Angeles Times). Yes, Bob Dylan's a contrarian, a trait he's confirmed concert after concert, year after year for most of his life. Out of the gate, it looked like he might indeed indulge the audience's reflexive inclinations for hits. He offered a set that opened with "Rainy Day Women & 35," with fans from various generations chiming in on its woozy chorus: "Everybody must get stoned!" From there, he kept to the straight-and-narrow with "Don't Think Twice, It's All Right," "Highway 61 Revisited" and "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue

When it started, Bob Dylan was in a bad place. We know this because Dylan himself has actually confessed as much, in his autobiography, Chronicles Volume 1. At the very end of the 1970s he started out on the tour that accompanied his first album of religious songs, Slow Train Coming. Fans streamed out when it became clear than Dylan and his gospel backup singers actually were going to spend the entire evening singing ditties like God Gave Names to All the Animals

On the actual recorded interview, writes Gray, Dylan does say, "It's all the same tour. In the liner notes to his 1993 album World Gone Wrong, Dylan writes that fans shouldn't get "bewildered by the Never Ending Tour chatter," claims it ended in 1991 with the departure of lead guitarist G. E. Smith, and says that each leg of his tour has its "own character and design. The notes have a sardonic tone, but in a 2009 interview with Rolling Stone, Dylan showed some genuine rancor for the label

Bob Dylan was born in Duluth, Minnesota, on May 24, 1941. For six troubled months, Bob attended the University of Minnesota on a scholarship. Ending this album is the surging power and tragedy of Blind Lemon Jefferson's blues - "See That My Grave Is Kept Clean. The poignance and passion of this simple song reveals both the country blues tradition - and its newest voice, Bob Dylan - at their very finest. Although only 20 years old, Bob Dylan is one of the most distinctive stylists to play in a Manhattan cabaret in months. Resembling a cross between a choir boy and a beatnik, Mr. Dylan has a cherubic look and a mop of tousled hair he partly covers with a Huck Finn black corduroy cap.
