Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a long-term progressive disease of the liver and gallbladder characterized by inflammation and scarring of the bile ducts which normally allow bile to drain from the gallbladder. Affected individuals may have no symptoms or may experience signs and symptoms of liver disease such as yellow discoloration of the skin and eyes, itching, and abdominal pain.

Primary sclerosing cholangitis is idiopathic (. having, as at present, no known cause). The primary physiological function of bile is to assist in the breakdown and absorption of fat in the intestinal tract; a relative deficiency of bile can lead to fat malabsorption and deficiencies of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K. .PSC is generally diagnosed on the basis of having at least two of three clinical

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic, usually progressive, stricturing disease of the biliary tree. Remissions and relapses characterize the disease course. Primary sclerosing cholangitis may remain quiescent for long periods of time in some patients; in most cases, however, it is progressive. The prevalence of primary sclerosing cholangitis in the United States is approximately 1–6 cases per 100,000 population. Most patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis are men (75%) with an average age of approximately 40 years at diagnosis. The overwhelming majority of patients affected.

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic cholestatic disease of the liver and bile ducts that is frequently progressive and can lead to end-stage liver disease. The disease is characterized by progressive inflammation, fibrosis, and stricturing of the intrahepatic and extrahepatic bile ducts (picture 1). The diagnosis is best established by contrast cholangiography, which reveals a characteristic picture of diffuse, multifocal strictures and focal dilation of the bile ducts, leading to a beaded appearance EPIDEMIOLOGY. The epidemiology of PSC in the general population has not been well established.

Patients with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) are at increased risk for developing cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). However, the morphology of precursor lesions and the prevalence of biliary dysplasia among patients undergoing liver transplantation for PSC are incompletely defined, and the earlier studies using relatively small number of cases have yielded conflicting results. We retrospectively evaluated 100 consecutive formalin-fixed PSC liver explants (including 30 with CCA) by randomly sampling the hilar and large intrahepatic bile ducts (10 additional tissue cassettes submitted per case)

Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is a disease of the bile ducts that causes inflammation and obliterative fibrosis of bile ducts inside and/or outside of the liver.
