The Music of Afghanistan comprises many varieties of classical music, folk music, and modern popular music. Afghanistan has a rich musical heritage and features a mix of Persian melodies, Indian compositional principles, and the sounds from ethnic groups such as the Pashtuns, Tajiks and Hazaras. Instruments used range from Indian tablas to long-necked lutes, and its classical music is closely related to Hindustani classical music.

Music of Afghanistan presents songs and dances that feature instruments such as the rubab (lute), saranda (bowed instrument similar to violin and lute), and tabla drums. The liner notes to this 1961 recording describe the rich folklore that is part of Afghanistan's heritage: In addition to music and dance, oral tradition about legendary heroes and great events. The ten tracks, which were recorded by Radio Kabul, include solos, instrumental duets, and a piece by the Afghan National Orchestra.

This seems to be an earlier release of the same Lubtchansky 1959 recordings that Disques Vogues released in 1969. Other: Grove Press address lower left of sleeve rear.

Afghanistan has barely been out of the news for years, it seems, and during the rule of the Taliban, from 1996-2001, music was banned. There are several examples of the national instrument, the plucked rubab, and more from the short-necked lute called the dambura. They're all vastly different and quite lovely, giving a sense of true variety. Afghanistan still has many problems, but it's a place that's flourishing again musically - and long may that last.

Album · 1973 · 11 Songs. Afghanistan - Music from Kabul Verna Gillis. Listen on Apple Music.

They stopped the music and destroyed my instruments," he says through a translator. I needed another job so I had to become a butcher. He appears on the Rough Guide to Afghanistan, sarinda restored, slithery and tart on this violin-like instrument, working his way through a series of Logari folk tunes, putting miles between himself and the cruel chunk. The tabla percussion that accompanies him is a background presence that runs through much of the album, setting the pace, even on the opening pop song, a mix of singing and synthesiser from Setara Hussainzada, who was once a contestant on the TV show Afghan Star.
