Their live 2011 recording of the Symphony No. 5 in C sharp minor for Exton is a fine example of Honeck's fine interpretive skills, the orchestra's precise and powerful playing, and the label's excellence in sound engineering. Honeck gets almost everything right in this Fifth, and if this tempo or that articulation may seem arbitrary when heard in isolation, or strange if it's a detail that's seldom highlighted, it all makes sense when the performance is heard as a totality.

Manfred Honeck (born 17 September 1958, in Nenzing) is an Austrian conductor and the Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra since the 2008/2009 season. In 2018, he was named Artist of the Year by the International Classical Music Awards. On January 28, 2018, Honeck and the PSO were awarded the 2018 Grammy Award for Best Orchestral Performance for their recording of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 and Barber’s Adagio for Strings.

Label: Reference Recordings. 2Symphony No. 5 in D Minor, Op. 47: II. Allegretto (Live)05:47. In his fascinating and scholarly music notes, Maestro Honeck gives us great insight into the history of both pieces, and describes how he conducts and interprets each. He reminds us that Joseph Stalin’s Soviet government was offended by Shostakovich’s previous works.

Manfred Honeck describes Barber's 1967 a capella version for mixed choir using the ''Agnus Dei'' text, and tells us his own interpretaiton is inspired by this text. He says it is ''for me, without a doubt, the key to finding a deeper sense of this piece. Perhaps it is for this reason that the Adagio has enchanted and moved audiences around the world since its very first incarnation and has continued to do so in all subsequent versions born since.
