Retrograde was the first single from James Blake’s 2013 album Overgrown. Blake has explained in interviews that Retrograde was inspired by his girlfriend, Warpaint guitarist Theresa Wayman. He gushed about his relationship with Theresa in an interview with Pigeons and Planes: I had a muse this record - a beautiful person to write about, to be excited about, and to be sad to be missing.

James Blake Litherland (born 26 September 1988) is an English singer, songwriter, t and record producer from London. He first received recognition for a series of 2010 EPs including CMYK and Klavierwerke, and he released his self-titled debut album in 2011 to critical praise. His second album Overgrown was released in 2013 and awarded the Mercury Prize. He released his third album The Colour in Anything in 2016. His fourth album Assume Form was released in 2019.
