Through The Looking Glass was Takada's first solo LP and one of her landmark creative works. She was also part of Mkwaju Ensemble, a trio originally led by Joe Hisaishi that explored African-influenced polyrhythms and was featured on Chee Shimizu's 2016 Better Days compilation. The soft chimes and bird calls of "Mr. Henri Rousseau's Dream" evoke the landscapes of the French painter. The album's cover art, by Yoko Ochida, also echoes Rousseau, whose jungle scenes were a product of imagination rather than experience.
That is why I named this album Through The Looking Glass. The reflection on the mirror seems to show something, but I did not want to indulge in that. I wanted rather to force discernment of my true self that was beyond the reflection. That Accelerando is thhe most aggressive progression on the album. As the tempo gradually increases, the piano and reed organ slowly build a wall of sound. The acceleration directs the listener's attention inward, towards the music itself, as opposed to its performance.
I met Midori Takada in London at the end of a successful European tour in promotion of 2017’s Through The Looking Glass reissue. The previous night at a sold-out Café Oto had witnessed a mesmerising percussive performance by her that was by turns serene, ceremonial, theatrical, poetic, and thunderously loud. Elegantly dressed in modernist Tokyo style, she was humble and friendly in person. Deep thinking and strongly opinionated on the subject of music, she has an encyclopaedic knowledge garnered through a lifetime of exploration and study.
If you don’t already know, that record is percussionist and composer Midori Takada‘s debut solo album, Through the Looking Glass, released originally in 1983. And yes, it’s a masterwork. This isn’t just Japanese new-age hindsight fetishism at play here. The record had found its audience. Takada’s debut LP has just been rereleased in the US by Palto Flats and in Europe by WRWTFWW Records, pressed to vinyl for only the second time in 34 years, to meet its overwhelming demand. Takada, herself, is newly represented internationally and touring festivals to sold-out audiences. I even bought my copy of the LP last week and feel, well, awesome about it! Yet there are other winners here, too.
Through The Looking Glass is from a Japanese lady percussionist Midori Takada. the 2017 CD reissue of the long OOP Through the Looking Glass by Midori Takada is a stunning mix of experimental music that mixes sounds from world music, ambient and Philip Glass like repetitiveness into a one of a kind delight. Rarely anymore(happened for me much more in the 90s) do I hear something that is not very similar to many other bands or clearly a knockoff of best seller type artist.
Through The Looking Glass (CD). Happily, WRWTFWW Records has decided to reissue it on CD, allowing those without overblown budgets/oodles of disposable income to wallow in its' gentle, humid majesty.
