The Colossus of Destiny: A Melvins Tale is an entertaining documentary that spans the 33 year journey of the rule-breaking, highly influential band. Melvin. o they have a peer? Who’s their peer? Kinda don’t have one. – Josh Homme. Even though The Melvins were signed for a two album deal by the heavy-hitting major label Atlantic in 1993, with Houdini (produced by Kurt Cobain) and Stoner Witch, they stayed true to their beliefs. Which is also probably the reason they haven’t been back on a major label since. Even if you have never listened to the Melvins, I believe you’ll find this movie highly entertaining. The Melvins formed in Aberdeen/Montesano, WA in 1983 the founding members were Buzz, Mike Dillard (drums), and ex-Mudhoney bassist Matt Lukin. Buzz, Mike, and Matt all went to high school in Montesano. The name Melvins came from a grocery clerk at the Thriftway in Montesano where King Buzzo served as clerk and vandal. The Colossus of Destiny is a two-track escapade of live, noisy experimentation. More like avant-garde electro-acoustic than anything else, this abrasive collage of bleeps and samples is the segment of Melvins' live shows that sends the merely curious out of the room and draw the dedicated close to the stage.
