Benjamin Damage - Obsidian Most techno producers want to soundtrack Saturday night, but Benjamin Damage is well-suited for those hungover Mondays after a big weekend. The Berlin-based Brit makes music that sounds starved of sleep: the past weekend's excitement courses through his fuzzy-headed, euphoric, melancholic tracks like a fading memory. Both Heliosphere, his first full-length on 50 Weapons, and Obsidian, his second solo outing and the last 50 Weapons album, sound bathed in a muzzy warmth. There is a formula to the way Damage works.

It's fitting that Benjamin Damage is the last artist to release an album on 50 Weapons. Apart from owners Modeselektor, he was also one of the first to feature on the label. Obsidian sees Damage straddle a fine line between the melodic and the atmospheric, the dance floor-heavy and the visceral. This is audible on the title track, where spacey chords are introduced over a rolling rhythm and on "Monolith", an arrangement that sees Damage fuse tribal beats with fragile, angelic hooks

Benjamin Damage - Obsidian Label: 50 Weapons (50WEAPONSLP18). This debut album, informed by '90s IDM and ambient, tapped into some of the lushest euphoria techno could offer, but also featured outright bangers like "010x" and "Delirium Tremens. Two years later, Damage's Obsidian LP continued to explore that space and uncover strange treasures. It was both an excellent release and the ideal final album for 50Weapons. After five years of involvement, Damage seems to encapsulate what the label stood for: heavy beats, flawless production and wide-ranging influences. Which is also what you get from his RA podcast.
