Happy Birthday is the debut album by the British new wave band Altered Images. Released in 1981, the album's title track, "Happy Birthday", became the band's biggest hit, peaking at number 2 in the UK in October of that year. The album reached number 26 in the UK Album Chart and was certified Silver by the BPI for sales in excess of 60,000 copies

Altered Images formed in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1979, with founding members Clare Grogan (vocals), Gerard Caesar McInulty (guitar), Johnny McElhone (bass), Tony McDaid (guitar), and Michael "Tich" Anderson (drums). In 1980 Clare appeared in Bill Forsyth's film Gregory's Girl which helped to bring attention to the band, and after sending a demo to Siouxsie & The Banshees they secured an opening slot for their 1980 tour. This association soon resulted in the choice of Banshees bassist Steven Severin to produce AI's first recorded work.

The first Altered Images album, 'Happy Birthday', was a sublime mixture of sweet and menacing, bubblegum & sex. Produced by Severin (of Siouxsie and the Banshees), and sounding exactly like a Banshees album sung by a child. Unfortunately the album was a hit and a new producer was brought in to wreak havoc on everything good about the band.
