A few months ago, Wild Beasts announced that the band had run its course, signifying the end of an era for the indie-pop quartet. The news came free of drama, meaning that the members would be able to finish out their time amicably, with dignities intact, and give closure to their fans. We get to leave our desk by our own accord, says frontman Hayden Thorpe. And that makes us very lucky. Now, they’ve announced one more token of gratitude to present to their followers before officially moving on: Last Night All My Dreams Came True, a live album of performances at RAK Studios in London. The stripped-down song sounds harrowing, with Thorpe and bassist Tom Fleming trading off lyrics over sparse instrumentals.

It’s not an entirely satisfying goodbye, but it’s a faithful snapshot of a band always in motion. Their masterpiece, 2011’s Smother, is sadly underrepresented ( End Come Too Soon would have been appropriate), as is 2014’s Present Tense. That album provides some surprising highlights, like when Thorpe weaves a few lyrics from Palace into The Devil’s Crayon, one of Fleming’s first great songs, from their debut. Both Present Tense and this set open with Wanderlust, the dazzling fight song that calls out the legions of British acts who emerged around Wild Beasts and swiftly lost their identity. While it might not be a satisfying goodbye, Last Night All My Dreams Came True is-like all of Wild Beasts’ albums-an artfully rendered snapshot of a band always in motion.

While it may not be the last will and testament fans might have hoped for, Wild Beasts’s supposed swan song, Last Night All My Dreams Came True, stands as a fitting capstone to the band’s canon. Rather than write a new album’s worth of material, Wild Beasts recorded new studio performances of their best-loved songs, played with more muscle and immediacy than before. As such, the album serves as a satisfying roundup of their greatest hits while also shifting the focus from the group’s lush arrangements and skilled studio craft to their chemistry as a live band.

Wild Beasts' third studio album, entitled Smother, was released in May 2011. The band subsequently announced the addition of touring band member Katie Harkin from Sky Larkin. They won the 2011 London Awards for Art and Performance. The band released their fourth studio album Present Tense on 24 February 2014. Their fifth studio album, Boy King was released on 5 August 2016 also on Domino Records. On 25 September 2017, Wild Beasts announced their disbandment. An EP, Punk Drunk & Trembling, was released on 20 October 2017
