David Bowie released 'Heroes' in October 1977. In 1977, David Bowie was in the middle of yet another transformation. With the October release of Heroes, he took further steps into a more electronic-flavored sound that first reared its head on the Low album issued earlier in the year. Often referred to as his "Berlin Trilogy" due to the influence of the city where much of the recordings were made, the trio would be complete with Lodger from the 1978. All three albums are distinctly different, yet have a unifying sonic theme.

Flashback: David Bowie Plays a Haunting ‘Heroes’ in 1978. London performance was professionally recorded for a concert movie that has yet to see an official release. All three nights opened up with the low, instrumental Warszawa that went directly into the title track to Heroes – which you can watch here. He recorded the song at West Berlin’s Hansa Studios in the summer of 1977, directly in the shadow of the Berlin Wall. The sight of producer Tony Visconti kissing backup singer Antonia Maas near the enormous stricture inspired Bowie to write a tale about two lovers embracing near the wall as guns shot above our heads. The Stage live album was recorded earlier in the tour and this is a far better show. In This Article: David Bowie, Heroes.

The tour opened on 29 March 1978 at the San Diego Sports Arena continuing through North America, Europe and Australia before reaching a conclusion at the Nippon Budokan in Japan on 12 December 1978. Bowie had the band learn the entirety of the Ziggy Stardust album in rehearsals, although most of the songs were never performed live on the tour. The instrumental track " Art Decade " typically followed the Ziggy Stardust tracks, a mellow track to follow the energy of the Ziggy Stardust material. Tracks from the 1976 album Station To Station were the closing numbers. In the late 1980s, Bowie regarded some of the songs he performed live on the tour as a bit "ponderous", referring specifically to some of the long instrumental performances such as " Warszawa
