Man from the South" is a short story by Roald Dahl originally published in Collier's in 1948. It has been adapted several times for television and film, including a 1960 version starring Steve McQueen and Peter Lorre. While vacationing at a resort in Jamaica, the narrator encounters an elderly South American man named Carlos. They are soon joined by a young American naval cadet, who boasts about the reliability of his cigarette lighter.
He is from South American. He cannot speak English well. I think he is the health oldish man because he walking briskly around the edge of the pool. Unfortunately, I think he has problem with his psychology or maybe he is crazy because he has been undergoing the strange action for his bet by cutting off the other people’s fingers. He is also liar because he confesses that he is the owner of Cadillac car, the fact that it is his friend owner. The boy: he is American cadet from America who wants to be sailor.

The short story explores very carefully the theme of the misleading appearances. Except for the narrator, nobody in the short story is who they seem to be. For instance, the first description of the old South American man indicates that he is quite a gentleman, sane, rich and elegant.
