NOTES: North Star (1977), a film by Barbara Rose and François de Menil, documents the work of the American sculptor Mark di Suvero. The music was commissioned by the film makers and follows the development of the exhibit work by work. Accordingly, the name of each of the music compositions is taken from the work of sculpture being viewed in the film. Music Composed by Philip Glass. North Star stands in sharp contrast with Virgin's British art rock bands of the '70s. Where National Health and Matching Mole displayed principled mock jazzy expansion, Glass' brevity cuts his cyclical arpeggios and ostinatos at their peak of intensity.

But most of the songs are rather one dimensional, containing a progression from the primary instrument and hardly anything else. This lends itself to a very repetitive sound that becomes rather exhausting the more you listen. Again, some of the songs are beautiful but the whole of the album is rather unremarkable and hard to get through.

I was not surprised to find out it was Phillip Glass, given the quality.
