Carnaval, Op. 9, is a work by Robert Schumann for piano solo, written in 1834–1835 and subtitled Scènes mignonnes sur quatre notes (Little Scenes on Four Notes). It consists of 20 short pieces representing masked revelers at Carnival, a festival before Lent. Schumann gives musical expression to himself, his friends and colleagues, and characters from improvised Italian comedy (commedia dell'arte). He dedicated the work to the violinist Karol Lipiński.

Claudio Arrau's probing, gestalt-ridden aesthetic is always tuned into Schumann's songful restlessness, yet often at the expense of the composer's fanciful, skittish side. While I prefer Arrau's earlier, more mercurial Carnaval (recorded in 1939 and reissued a gazillion times), his warm, elegant Kinderszenen is worth this disc's mid-price. Overall, it is a fine Carnaval though not necessarily the front-runner. Kinderszenen is an unqualified success.
